It’s one of the most-searched questions about lip enhancement — and one of the most over-simplified. When people ask how long lip filler lasts, or look up lip filler duration, they’ll see “6 to 12 months” quoted everywhere — but that single number hides a lot of interesting biology. Here’s the honest, evidence-based answer, including what the research actually measures.
Quick answer: Most hyaluronic acid (HA) lip fillers last roughly 6 to 12 months. Lips tend to sit at the shorter end of that range because they’re in constant motion. Rather than vanishing all at once, filler fades on a gradual slope — you get a window of peak fullness, then a slow taper back toward your natural volume.
Why lip filler doesn’t last forever
Almost all modern lip fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule your body already produces to hold water in the skin. That’s exactly why it’s so well tolerated — and also why it’s temporary. Your body recognises it and gradually breaks it down using a natural enzyme called hyaluronidase, alongside everyday mechanical stress from talking, eating and smiling.
Manufacturers slow this process down by “cross-linking” the HA — creating bonds that make the gel more resistant to enzymatic breakdown. More cross-linking generally means a firmer, longer-lasting gel; lighter, softer gels made for delicate lip tissue tend to fade a little sooner. This is also the reassuring part: because HA is a natural substance, results can be adjusted or dissolved with hyaluronidase if ever needed.
What the studies actually show
Here’s where it gets genuinely interesting. Rather than relying on patient guesswork, a 2024 prospective study published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum tracked lip volume in patients using precise 3-D scanning at set intervals after injection. The measured volume, relative to immediately after treatment, looked roughly like this:

Two takeaways matter here. First, a good chunk of what you see in the first week is normal swelling — which is why your true result settles at around the two-week mark, not on day one (you can see how settled results tend to look in our lip filler before-and-after gallery). Second, after that initial settling, the volume came down at a fairly steady, gradual rate. That’s the science behind the “slow slope, not a cliff” idea: even at nine months, meaningful volume can still be present, just softer than at peak.
Broader clinical guidance lines up with this. The American Academy of Dermatology lists HA gel fillers as lasting roughly 4 to 12 months, and lip-specific products such as Restylane® Kysse and Juvéderm® Volbella have longevity data supporting results of up to about 12 months for many patients. Placement matters too: filler in the highly mobile body of the lip tends to fade faster than filler along the more static vermilion border.
A closer look at resilient HA: Teoxane RHA®

The lip-augmentation research on RHA® 3 is a great example of evidence in action. In the FDA lip-augmentation study, a visible effect was present in roughly 78% of patients at 12 weeks, about 61% at nine months, and around 48% at one year. A 2025 randomised controlled trial in 202 patients similarly found that RHA® 3 maintained lip volume through a full 52 weeks. Teoxane itself describes the collection as lasting up to about a year in the lips, and up to roughly 15 months in dynamic wrinkles and folds.
Notice what that curve illustrates: even a resilient, longer-lasting filler follows the same gentle downward slope — strong early results that taper steadily across the year, rather than a fixed “expiry date.” You may occasionally see much higher numbers quoted for RHA (well beyond a year, or approaching two years). Those figures usually reflect less mobile areas, best-case individual responses, or marketing language — not the average lip result measured under trial conditions. We’d always rather quote you the studied number than the hopeful one.
The honest caveat: you are not a spreadsheet
This is the part a lot of clinics skip. Even though well-designed clinical studies show clear, repeatable patterns — steady volume decline, a predictable 6-to-12-month window, longevity differences between products — those numbers are averages measured across groups of people under controlled conditions. Human tissue and metabolism don’t read the study.
Two people can receive the same product, the same amount, placed by the same injector on the same afternoon, and still see their results fade at noticeably different rates. Your individual enzyme activity (which is largely genetic), your age, how physically active you are, blood flow, sun exposure and smoking all nudge the timeline in one direction or another. So think of the research as an excellent map — not a personal guarantee. The evidence tells us what’s likely; your own lips have the final say.
What affects how long your filler lasts
- Product and cross-linking. Firmer, more cross-linked gels generally outlast softer ones.
- How much is placed. A fuller correction has more “runway” before it fades below a noticeable level.
- Where it’s placed. The mobile centre of the lip metabolises faster than the border — the same principle is why face filler in less mobile areas like the cheeks often lasts longer.
- Your metabolism and age. Faster metabolisers — often younger, very active people — tend to break filler down sooner.
- Lifestyle. Intense, frequent exercise, smoking and heavy sun exposure can all shorten longevity.

Helping your results last
You can’t override your biology, but you can support your result: stay well hydrated, protect your lips from sun with an SPF lip balm, avoid smoking, and keep to a sensible maintenance rhythm rather than waiting until everything has disappeared. Many patients find that touch-ups placed before full fade-out use a little less product over time, because residual filler helps the look stay consistent.
